Tips for finding the best student accommodation in Newcastle

Newcastle is one of the North’s biggest and liveliest cities. This is due in part to the two universities located in its city centre: Newcastle University and Northumbria University.

With approximately 55,000 students between both unis, it’s no surprise that Newcastle’s privately rented sector is dominated by students. In fact, every one in six properties is registered as student accommodation, meaning it’s easier here than anywhere else to find somewhere great to live.

If you’re looking for the best student accommodation in Newcastle, this simple guide will make finding your perfect student flat simple and easy.

Why choose student accommodation in Newcastle?

Dubbed ‘the 15-minute city’, Newcastle is known for its ability to cram vibrant nightlife, amazing places to eat, green spaces and extensive student accommodation options into a relatively small space.

Plus, with two well-renowned universities in walking distance of each other, there’s an abundance of student-centred resources dotted around the city centre. Take, for example, the City Library. It has several floors of study space available and is easily accessible on foot or by bus from any student accommodation in Newcastle.

There’s more to Newcastle than the city centre, though. Where else do students live in Newcastle?

Student accommodation in Jesmond

For those of you looking for student accommodation in a busy suburb separate to the city centre, Jesmond could be the place for you. Traditionally, Jesmond is more popular with students from Newcastle University, although that’s not to say that you won’t find clusters of Northumbria second years there too!

Because Jesmond is so popular, the student accommodation here is slightly pricier than in other areas of the city. However, transport links are excellent (you can get into the city centre by bus or metro in under 15 minutes), and the high street is home to a number of student-focused bars, cafes, independent restaurants and convenience shops.

Student accommodation in Ouseburn

For those of you looking for great student accommodation at a lower price than Jesmond, Ouseburn is a great option. With its bustling music scene, creative networks and local heritage, there really is something for everyone. Ouseburn is within walking distance to both universities and has lots of accommodation choices for students. Ouseburn is a quieter area that Jesmond and Sandyford, but has very quickly become the place to be due to the wealth of cool, independent bars and cafes, micro-breweries, music venues and artists’ studios all on the doorstep.

Student accommodation in Sandyford

If you want to be close to the city centre, but don’t want to pay city centre prices, consider looking at student accommodation in Sandyford. Situated just outside of the city centre, Sandyford is a short walk away from both Northumbria and Newcastle University and is comfortably close enough to the city’s nightlife hubs that you could walk into town comfortably on a night out (though we’d advise getting a taxi or bus back!)

Renting student accommodation in Sandyford is cheaper than in other areas like Jesmond and the city centre.
