Which type of student accommodation is best for you?

Before you go off to university, you have to sort out your living arrangements first. It can be intimidating to leave the comfort of your home and move to a new place without the people you know and love. This is why you have to find the right student accommodation to make your transition as smooth as possible.

If you are going to a place far away from home, here are two main options for you: purpose-built halls or a privately rented house. This article will discuss these options in more detail so that you can figure out which one is best for you.

Purpose built halls – student accommodation

Purpose built halls are blocks of flats that accommodate a large number of students. There are usually many different types of rooms available, from studios to 6, 7 or even 8 bed apartments, including private furnished bedrooms, en suite facilities or apartments with a shared kitchen and bathroom.

When you live in purpose-built halls it is easy for you to meet fellow students, make new friends, and participate in social activities.

Even though your bedroom may be smaller than privately rented accommodation in Newcastle, you can easily access all the facilities you need and you usually have to pay just one bill.

Despite the convenience you get, student accommodation can appear to be more expensive than renting a private house or flat but often this isn’t the case, it is just that everything is included.

 Privately rented accommodation

With private accommodation you get to choose where you want to live, even though it may be further from campus. In Newcastle, popular private rented areas include Jesmond, Ouseburn, Sandyford and Shieldfield and all of these popular student areas have good transport links to campus and the city centre, as well as decent restaurants, bars, shops and supermarkets on their doorstep.

Note that if you choose to go this route, you will have to sort out bill payments yourself. These may include things such as utilities, gas, electric, water and internet access. Therefore, you need to make sure that you and your housemates can stay on top of these bills and manage your budget well. In addition, be sure to read through your contract carefully to understand your rights and responsibilities as a tenant.
